Following an evaluation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, Apple has reportedly chosen to integrate ChatGPT with iOS 18.
Apple and OpenAI Ink Billion-Dollar AI Integration Deal
In a move that could be worth billions, Apple and OpenAI have finalized a deal to integrate OpenAI’s conversational AI products into Apple’s software, according to The Information. This partnership comes after Apple evaluated both Google and OpenAI’s AI chatbots, ultimately deciding in favor of Sam Altman’s company. An official announcement is expected at Apple’s WWDC, scheduled from June 10 to 14.
However, the road to this agreement wasn’t without its bumps. Internally, Apple faced some resistance. John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of AI/ML, reportedly quipped to employees, “The last thing people needed was another AI chatbot,” when asked about the company’s AI plans.
Apple has traditionally lagged behind other Big Tech firms in AI development, and this deal represents OpenAI’s effort to prioritize commercial products and revenue generation alongside their AI research advancements.
Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently met with Sam Altman to discuss concerns about the new agreement, particularly how it might conflict with Microsoft’s own partnership with OpenAI.
The report also reveals that Altman and his supporters are considering restructuring OpenAI as either a for-profit entity or a benefit corporation (B-Corp). This shift would allow OpenAI to pursue goals beyond mere shareholder profits and protect the company from lawsuits if decisions are made for reasons other than profit.
